A Colorful Digital Science Experiment
The students we are teaching today are growing up with a smartphone in their hand and the world at their fingertips.
But I still find myself falling into the rut of the traditional classroom at times.
As teachers, we have the world at our fingertips too – even our educational world. Why not use it? Right?
This last year has at least taught us that we need to be able to accommodate learning in a variety of settings.
That’s exactly what I’ve done with my Rainbow Milk Experiment.
It is now available as a paper-pencil science activity AND a digital science experiment! Whether it’s traditional in-person classes or virtual you can achieve the same learning outcomes for your students.
What is the Rainbow Milk Experiment?
The Rainbow Milk Experiment is a fun, hands-on way to teach the scientific method to elementary students. But the coolest thing is it comes with a full paper and digital version so you can accommodate all your students.
Students take part in a simple science experiment that involves food coloring, dish soap, and milk. The workbook guides them through the scientific method. Each student has their own workbook to record their progress, observations, and conclusions. Plus, the Rainbow Milk Experiment also includes a full digital version so kids can complete the workbook using Google slides.
The scientific method is embedded into the digital and paper workbook.
What do I get with the Rainbow Milk Experiment?
I know you want to know exactly what comes with this experiment! Here is what is included:
· Cover Page
· Page 1: Explanation of the experiment (also useful for parents)
· Page 2: Guided question and setting up a hypothesis
· Page 3: The actual experiment in both picture form and written form
· Page 4: Observations (in both written and picture form)
· Page 5: Conclusion
· Page 6: Explanation of the science behind the experiment (also includes a fill in the blank option)
This whole thing is printable and easily implemented in the classroom. But wait!
You also get all of this in a digital format. You get the directions for the experiment, a full digital version, and all the student worksheets you’ll need!
I actually created a whole bundle of easy science experiments with digital versions. I shared about them a couple weeks ago!
How does the digital version work?
You are going to love this! The digital version includes everything the print version has, it’s just all completed online.
Students will receive the exact same workbook pages, but they are on Google slides. They can fill it all out online and click “present” to save and share the information with parents or teachers.
You may think that the digital version presents some logistic problems. But it does not at all. Here are a few ideas on how to use the same experiment in a digital format:
· Make your own video of you doing the experiment and upload it.
· If making videos is not your thing, you can find one you like on YouTube that teach the scientific method.
· You can do the experiment via Zoom or other online meeting software.
It’s so easy to adapt the Rainbow Milk Experiment to our teaching style and environment. You can work through it in the classroom, or in the virtual environment. It’s that versatile!
