Grade 2 Graphing and Data Activity
2nd grade is a hectic year in the math department!
From fractions to 3D shapes, 2nd graders have a lot of basic math concepts to get down. This not only ensures they meet their standards, but serves as the foundation of great math skills for years and years to come!
One of the trickiest concepts that 2nd graders struggle with are graphing and data. Students don’t just need to build their graphs, but they need to analyze them and take down their observations. Younger students always struggle a little with translating real world ideas into concepts like linear graphs. So how do we help them learn about graphing and data without losing their focus?
The solution is hands-on activities! Whenever math lessons get more rigorous — which they definitely do in 2nd grade — it’s so important to use engaging, fun activities to teach those difficult concepts. Younger students just learn better when they find a lesson enjoyable. Yes, I am definitely throwing shade at boring worksheets right now!
This 2nd Grade Graphing and Data Activity is a fun and engaging way to help students master trickier math concepts! Students put together their own foldables, practicing their fine motor skills in the process. The foldable explains the various graphs in clear and easy language to students. It also helps them draw conclusions about what the data means and how to collect the data from the graphs. Finally, they can practice filling out graphs themselves to drive home what they’ve learned!
What’s included in this 2nd Grade Graphing Resource?
This foldable covers all the 2nd grade standards that involve graphing and data, so you can feel confident knowing your students will meet the requirements! Topics covered include…
● Vocabulary
● Tallies
● Bar Graphs
● Pictographs
● Line Plots
● Practice Page with Questions
Depending on the needs of your students, there are two versions included: one with the answers already written in and one where the spaces are left blank. This is perfect for differentiating the activity for any students who are especially struggling with graphs or just beginning to learn about them.
You also receive a step by step video tutorial on how to assemble the foldables. This is a great way to prepare for class and answer any questions your students might have!
How does the 2nd Grade Graphing and Data Activity work?
Foldables aren’t just fun for 2nd graders — they are also super easy to assemble, so you don’t have to help students through every step of the process. Students begin with a large sheet of black construction paper. Then, they paste the printed squares that you receive upon download onto the different panels of the construction paper. Finally, they complete the activity! Depending on whether you use the version where the blanks are filled in or not, students can either read about the different kinds of graphs or write in their answers to the various prompts.
The video tutorial that’s included with this activity is super helpful for explaining this. Your students will become foldable masters in no time! And as always, if you suspect that your students may struggle to assemble their foldables, feel free to cut portions of the construction paper or the panels for them ahead of time.
How can you use this Grade 2 Graphing and Data Activity in the classroom?
If you’re just kicking off your 2nd grade graphing unit, this foldable activity is a fantastic way to introduce them to all the concepts in a fun way. Students can keep the foldable in their folders and refer back to it throughout the unit to help refresh their memories. They could even fill it out as your class moves through the unit and learns all about the various types and functions of graphs.
Alternatively, you could use it at the end of your 2nd grade graphing unit as a review. Since it touches on a lot of those key concepts, it would be an amazing way to help students lock in all of the basics before moving on to another unit.
