Handwriting Made Fun!
If you are teaching handwriting in elementary school, you probably know that it can be about as pleasant as getting a root canal.
You know you are teaching a beneficial skill. But your students often think otherwise.
What if you could make teaching handwriting in elementary school fun and something the kids look forward to?
What if I told you that this is possible?
It is entirely possible to improve student’s writing skills AND have them giggle along the way!
They are probably going to ask the question that is music to your teaching ears, “When do we get to do handwriting?”
I struggled with teaching handwriting in my elementary school classroom for years because the kids already knew the letters, they just needed that repetition practice. I thought to myself, there has to be another way.
So, I invented it. Hysterical Handwriting combines handwriting skills with lots of silly jokes and sentences. HINT: There’s a coupon code later in this post!
How Does Hysterical Handwriting Work?
There are several resources in the Hysterical Handwriting bundle.
First, I started with worksheets that could be used to teach handwriting in elementary school. These had a lot of silly sentences that my students enjoyed writing and giggled a lot while they wrote.
Then, I added Hysterical Handwriting 2.0 which is full of all sorts of silly jokes kids love.
Each worksheet features a silly sentence or joke to trace.
Then, there are blank spaces for the student to practice writing it on their own.
At the bottom of each page, they get to self-assess. They check for proper punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. THEY get to decide if they did their best work.
Not only are the kids enjoying handwriting, they are in the driver’s seat and can measure their own successes.
Oh, and don’t you worry! It comes in print AND cursive!
How do I use Hysterical Handwriting for Teaching Writing in Elementary School Classrooms?
There are literally tons of ways to use Hysterical Handwriting resources in your elementary classroom. The writing resources are geared for students in 1st to 6th grades, but I know many middle school teachers who use and love it.
Students should already be able to write and form letters properly and just need to hone the skill through practice.
Here are just a few ideas for ways to use Hysterical Handwriting:
· Use the worksheets as part of your lesson plans or for students who need some extra practice.
· Let the students create their own silly handwriting books.
· Print out the sheets and laminate them so they can be used over and over. (Great for centers!)
· Create a “writing center” students can visit once they have finished their other work.
These writing resources are print-and-go. It doesn’t get any easier than that my fellow teachers!
What Exactly is in the Hysterical Handwriting bundle?
There are two main workbooks with writing activities.
· Hysterical Handwriting Worksheets: This is the first workbook and contains lots of silly sentences kids will have fun writing.
· Hysterical Handwriting 2.0: These worksheets contain silly jokes for kids to use for writing practice.
