FREE 1st Grade Math Warm-Ups
Math can be an overwhelming concept for young students, but it doesn’t have to be boring! That is why I love to switch it up and offer fun, unique ways to practice math. One of my favorite ways to review math skills is by doing simple daily math warm-ups! These daily warm-ups help kick start the lesson and get students ready to focus and learn! Bonus point, students will love it!
Joke of the Day Game as a Daily Math Warm-Up
I realized it was getting hard to keep up with typical math warm-ups. There were always endless copies to keep track of and constant changes to keep up with. It made it difficult and overwhelming for students to finish quickly and efficiently.
I wanted something more simple and streamlined, so I created these 180 days of daily math warm-ups. These are digital and can be projected onto a board and done as a class or individually which means no more copies to keep track of and no more waiting for the copy machine!
These daily math warm-ups have students spiral review through every 1st-grade standard. This keeps math standards fresh in their brain all throughout the school year. Now when you teach a tricky concept like place value or time, it won’t be forgotten after a week or two. These warm-ups really help with comprehension and retaining information throughout the year which makes this teacher’s heart so happy!
What teachers love most about these daily warm-ups is the simplicity. You can use them in the classroom or when teaching remotely with Google Slides because they are self-correcting! It is an easy way to learn and practice math concepts without the hassle of printouts and tons of prep work.
How Does It Work?
These 1st-grade daily math warm-ups are a quick and easy way to get students’ brains ready to work on their math lessons. They are designed to be presented to the whole class on a digital platform like Google Slides, but you do not need Google. They also work for any classroom that has internet.
The first slide is the Joke of the Day. Students will then answer a series of 10 math questions to unlock the answer to the silly joke. If they answer the question correctly they will earn a star! If they answer incorrectly, it takes them back to the beginning to do the question until they solve for the right answer. Self-correcting lessons really are the best! A great perk of these daily warm-ups is that the question types change each day for fresh engaging practice for students which means students are exposed to over 40 question types throughout the week! Plus they spiral review through every 1st-grade standard!
The 1st-grade daily math warm-ups were created to be done as a whole group. There is such value in the class discussions and teamwork that students will engage in each day. After a few weeks, you will be seamlessly working through the lessons in no time! Ditch the boring, traditional math worksheets and grab these daily warm-ups your students will love!
Each week covers a variety of math concepts including:
- Skip Counting with pennies, nickels, and dimes
- Number Sense
- Fractions (whole, fourth/quarters, halves)
- Time (analog, digital, half past, o’clock)
- Measuring (nonstandard units)
- Addition & Subtraction through 100
- Place Value (1 more/less, 10 more/less, place value blocks, expanded form, word form, greater than, less than, comparing equations, fact families, part-part-whole, skip counting, etc.)
- Geometry (2D & 3D shapes, equal shares, sides, angles/vertices)
- Graphing
- Student recording sheet
What if I haven’t taught that standard yet?
Not a problem! One of the best parts of these warm-ups is that each week, you will cover the basics of each standard. This will help students get comfortable with each new concept! Now, when you get to the actual math unit for that standard, students already have an understanding of the concept and are ready to expand on that skill!
