FREE 2nd Grade Math Warm-Up
Let’s be real… math typically isn’t the most loved subject in elementary school. It can be an overwhelming concept to learn! That is why I love to incorporate fun and unique ways to teach and practice math. One of my favorite tricks for reviewing math skills with my second graders is through a silly and easy daily math warm-up! I’ve found that digital math warm-ups are a more engaging way to get students’ brains working and ready to focus on their daily math lessons.
Joke of the Day Game as a Daily Math Warm Up
Over the years, I noticed that with typical math warm-ups, I was struggling to keep up with all the endless copies, and oftentimes the formatting would change from week to week which made it difficult for the class to complete them quickly.
That’s why I ended up creating 180 days of daily math warm-ups that are all digital (hooray for no copies!) and can simply be projected onto the board and completed together! The best part? They spiral reviews through every standard in second grade which is awesome because the basics of each standard stay fresh in their brain… all year long! No more teaching a lesson about quarters and two weeks later, half the class has forgotten that a quarter is worth 25 cents!
Teachers love that they are super simple and can be used in the classroom or when distance learning with Google Slides because it is self-correcting! No printouts, no prep, just a quick and easy way to practice math in a way that will excite students!
How Does It Work?
This is a quick warm-up that is designed to be presented to the whole group typically in Google Slides, but it works on any digital platform. The first slide starts out with a Joke of the Day. Students then have to answer a series of 10 math questions to get the answer to the joke. If they get a question right, they earn a star! If they get it wrong, it will automatically take them back to re-do the question so they can solve for the correct answer. I love self-correcting lessons! The question types change each day so students are always learning and practicing in a fun, engaging new way. Plus they spiral review through every standard for second grade, you can’t beat that!
These are designed to be done whole-group! The value really comes in the class discussions you have each day. After the first couple of weeks, we are able to breeze through each day in about 10 minutes!
All About Daily Math Warm-Ups
Additionally, I found that adding these daily math warm-ups to our routine helps students solidify difficult math concepts and find an excitement for math as a whole! I encourage you to join me in ditching the boring math worksheets and grab these fun math warm-ups!
Each week covers a variety of math concepts including:
- Money (dollars, cents, dollar bills)
- Fractions
- Time (Clock, AM, PM, Half Past, Quarter ’til, etc.)
- Measuring (cm., m., in., ft.)
- Addition & Subtraction
- Place Value (1 more/less, 10 more/less, 100 more/less, place value blocks, expanded form, word form, greater than, less than, comparing equations, even/odd, skip counting, etc.)
- Geometry (2D & 3D shapes, partitioning, sides, angles, faces)
- Graphing
- Arrays and Repeated Addition
- Student recording sheet
What if I haven’t taught that standard yet?
That’s actually one of the best parts! Each week, you’ll repeatedly cover the basics of each standard which helps students get familiar with that concept! Teachers have loved that when they get to the actual unit on that standard, students already have a strong foundation and can really dive deep into that specific skill!
