Roll and Write Dice Place Value Game
The best way to make learning place value fun for students? Turn it into a game, of course!
From first through third grade, it’s the time to get down crucial number skills to form a strong base for more advanced math. The problem is, it can be difficult to make this place value dice game and worksheets fun for students.
Place value in particular is a concept that precedes many advanced skills, including multiple-digit multiplication, decimals, regrouping in addition and subtraction, and more.
While place value seems simple enough to us, children can find it difficult as it’s one of the more abstract mathematical concepts. This is largely because the location of the numbers changes their meaning, which can confuse younger students (and some adults!).
To solve this, I went ahead and created an engaging game to make learning place value and other important math standards an exciting game for kids: The Roll and Write Dice Place Value Game!
To be honest, your students might not even realize how much they’re learning while they play the game — that’s how fun it is! In my experience, kids get super excited to roll the dice and see what numbers they land on. Plus, it covers three Common Core standards, packing so much instructional value into one engaging game!
What’s included in the Roll and Write Dice Place Value Game?
This resource includes two versions of the game for differentiated learning and different levels: one with two digit place value, and one with three digit place value.
Columns on the game sheet include sections to practice all of the following skills:
● Standard Form
● Expanded notation/expanded form
● Base 10 blocks
● Even and odd
● Hundreds, tens, and ones
● Word form
All you need to complete the prep for the activity is a pair or several pairs of dice! You can absolutely use the standard 1-6 dice, but for a wider variation of numbers, I would encourage teachers to seek out dice that go up to 9.
Playing the game is both simple and fun for students. All they need to do is roll the dice, record the numbers, and then fill out the information for the number they got. They will roll the dice twice for 2 digits and three times for 3 digits. It’s best to roll one die at a time so they know which number to put on their chart first.
After the students get their number, they identify the standard form of the number, whether the number is even or odd, the expanded form, and so on! There is also an example in the first entry so that students know exactly how to fill their charts out.
By downloading this resource, you’ll also receive a digital version that is perfect for distance learning and extra practice at home!
How does the digital version of the Place Value Game work?
The digital version of the Roll and Write Place Value Game is on Google Slides, and even includes a pair of virtual dice to use if students don’t have their own pair at home!
Students will roll their virtual or real dice, then fill out the premade text boxes in the chart on Google Slides. The digital version includes two full sheets’ worth of game play. Plus, it has easy to follow directions that your students can use when they are at home.
Step-by-step directions for assigning with Google Classroom are also included!
How can the Roll and Write Place Dice Value Game be used in the classroom?
The Roll and Write Place Value Game can be used several different ways in class to help kids with their place value, forms, and more!
One of my favorite methods is to use this place value game in the classroom for stations or review centers. Since the activity is self-guided, the game is a breeze for students to play on their own or in small groups.
Another way to use the game is to make it a staple in the classroom by laminating the game. This way, students can grab the game whenever they want to play or practice. Even better, you’ll save paper and encourage students to practice when they want!
This activity also makes a great warm-up for a math lesson. Since it’s super fun and feels like a game, it’s bound to get every student engaged and ready for a great class!
