Earth Day Activities for Elementary Students
We love celebrating Earth Day in our classroom! There are so many fun and engaging ways to talk about the important topics surrounding Earth Day. Students will learn about the importance of protecting our planet, taking action to keep it clean, recycling and so much more. There are a variety of ways you can incorporate Earth Day activities into your classroom. Your students will love learning about our planet and how to keep it safe. Check out these 3 great Earth Day activities for kids that are both educational and fun!
1. Earth Day Flip Flap Activity
I love using flip flaps in the classroom and students love them too! They are a fun, interactive way to introduce new concepts by taking a deep dig into the subject. This Earth Day flip-flap writing activity will have students learning all about Earth Day and how they can be a part of keeping our planet clean. My favorite part about this specific activity is that it can be used with any research! I’ve used it with books, youtube videos, PebbleGo, the possibilities are endless!
Plus, it comes in print and digital forms so you can use it whatever way you see fit! Some of the topics covered in the flip-flap activity are Earth Day facts, a craftivity, and a writing activity! This is a fantastic way to research and learn all about Earth Day as a class, and it makes the most adorable bulletin board decoration afterward! I don’t know about your students, but mine love showing off their hard work!
2. Fun Earth Day Read Aloud
Another fun Earth Day activity for kids is choosing a book and doing a read-aloud with the class. I really enjoy Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers and so do my students! This book is a magical tour of our world, through land, sea, and sky. It takes you on a fantastic journey through this place we call home. It also touches on the diversity of people and creatures that live here on Earth. Here We Are is fun, easy to understand, and gives out plenty of great teaching moments. It is also beautifully illustrated which students love! I like to read this book on Earth Day, then have a class discussion on all the things about Earth that we have learned. The great thing about this book is that it ties right in with the flip-flap activity. Students can take their Earth Day knowledge from the book and record their findings in the flip-flap when they are done!

Earth Day Directed Drawing
Students love to get creative, throwing in a fun, directed drawing is the perfect Earth Day activity. This particular drawing is of the Earth in the shape of a heart. I found the directed drawing on YouTube and it is super simple for young students to follow along with. Plus it doesn’t take a lot of material or prep work, which is always a bonus! All you need is markers and construction paper! Students will end up with an adorable Earth in the shape of a heart with a cute little face and top it off with some clouds, the sun, and the moon! It’s also a great way to sneak in art and work on those fine motor skills! This is another great activity to be displayed on a classroom bulletin board or added to your flip-flap activity!
All About Earth Day
Earth Day is a great time to inspire students and let their creativity shine, while also teaching them. I love these 3 fun activities because they are simple, yet effective and really engage and excite students. Our planet is the only place we humans call home, so it is important to teach students about respecting and treating it with kindness, even at a young age. I feel like these activities allow students to dive deeper into learning about Earth and why we should work together to keep it healthy for years to come. I hope you love these activities as much as we do! Happy Earth Day!
