Parts of Speech Interactive Notebook
Raise your hand if you’ve struggled with keeping students engaged during grammar lessons…
Everyone’s hands up? Yup, we’ve all been there. Younger kids begin verbalizing grammar skills before they even realize it, but it can be hard to get and keep them interested while they are learning about it in class. I mean, I wouldn’t want to sit down and listen to someone drone on and on about grammar specifics either, and younger students are notoriously restless!
However, key grammar skills including parts of speech are a crucial building block for young learners. A mastery of basic grammar sets them up for success in more advanced reading and writing lessons. So, we need a fun way to lock in those skills that’s both engaging and informative…
I found my solution to this dilemma in this Parts of Speech Interactive Notebook! I love using interactive notebooks in the classroom with my 2nd graders because they make just about any topic enjoyable to learn. While I found it amazing for the 2nd grade level, teachers have used it for kindergarten classes, 1st graders, and 3rd graders as well!
When it comes to grammar lessons, you definitely need something that students can refer back to whenever they need. The notebook aspect is great because students are able to organize all of their pages in one place. Before I discovered them, I was constantly passing out worksheets and handouts that students would eventually misplace or forget about. Worksheets aren’t just inconvenient; they’re also not as engaging as a hands-on activity.
Interactive notebooks are a classic for a reason! It’s a great solution to folders full of loose papers that are disorganized and difficult to sort through. Plus, students enjoy having a notebook that they can customize and make their own.
The interactive aspect makes it exciting for kids to both assemble at first and review later on. Students are able to get some hands-on learning as they practice their fine motor skills by cutting, coloring, and pasting. I love this activity because it’s like a craft and grammar lesson rolled into one. Your younger students won’t even realize that they are learning those important parts of speech and grammar skills!
What’s included in the Parts of Speech Interactive Notebook?
This parts of speech activity covers three of the basic parts of speech: nouns, verbs, and adjectives. There are two pages designated for each. The first page teaches students about what that part of speech is and how it is used, and the second page lets students apply that lesson and practice in a fun way!
The interactive notebook also includes options for differentiation to suit a wider range of ages and skills. This way, you can write in the notes and answers yourself or leave some blank for students to fill in.
How Does the Parts of Speech Activity Work?
Good news, teachers! These interactive notebook pages are super simple for you to prepare for class time, but let students cut, color, and glue. Just pass out the pages and let students follow directions with some guidance. Students will read about the parts of speech and then complete the activity in their respective interactive notebooks. For example, they will be given a sentence on a cute pencil flap that they partially glue down to a notebook page. Then, they identify the verb, adjective, or noun in the sentence and write it underneath the pencil flap.
If they ever need a review, students can simply locate these pages in their notebooks and flip through their work. This makes it great for an end of the year review, a homework review, or something to fill up a free moment in class!
