Butterfly Life Cycle Activity – Butterfly Room Transformation
Did any of you have a classroom butterfly when you were in school?
Those beautiful little creatures are so much more than class pets. They teach classrooms all over about the butterfly life cycle in the most hands-on way possible!
Unfortunately, not all of us have the resources or ability to bring an actual live butterfly habitat into our classrooms. Luckily, there is another way to teach students about a butterfly’s metamorphosis — and it is just as exciting the real thing!
When I did this butterfly room transformation with my students, they all had the absolute time of their lives. It’s so rewarding to see how an educational project can be so exciting for students. It’s truly these moments that make teaching as magical as it is!
Even if you are able to bring the little critters into the classroom, it’s always great to have extra materials and plans to supplement your students’ study of life cycles. Whether you’re fully committed to bringing butterflies to your students or you want to immerse them in the experience (without the bugs), I’ve got just the activity for you!
Since my experiences with the butterfly room transformation were so amazing, I wanted to share with all of you exactly how to do it yourselves! This Butterfly Life Cycle Activity contains everything you need to get started on your own incredible room transformation.
Students will take on the role of scientific researcher as they explore the topic of the butterfly life cycle. This room transformation is amazing for a unit on life cycles or butterflies. Plus, they’ll get to practice some writing skills and grammar!
Life cycles are the perfect scientific opportunity for kids to use their natural curiosity to make observations about the world around them. They are one of the fundamental aspects of the STEM field, and one of the most important concepts for students to experience at a young age. Learning how living things grow in the world around them is exciting for every student!
Even though this activity involves a room transformation, you can prep for the event as little or as much as you’d like. I’ve included a shopping list, but you can still put on the show without spending a penny. Yes, you heard right — you can do this transformation without buying a single extra thing!
Trust me — once you see your students’ reactions to this room transformation, you’ll know why this is one of my all-time favorite activities for 1st-3rd grade classrooms!
