Beginning Blends Worksheets and Word Work
You’re probably well aware that great reading skills aren’t formed overnight!
Creating a classroom full of excellent readers takes lots of practice and activities to get there and meet the required learning standards.
Students begin to build their reading skills when they learn the alphabet and the sounds of letters. After that, they’ll need to master the many different blends of sounds that the alphabet can create.
Without the right building blocks of reading and phonetic skills, students won’t be able to read independently. It’s crucial to work on these skills before they are assigned independent reading and move on to grammar.
Blending sounds and beginning blends play a super important role in students’ phonetic skills. They help kids make sense of new words as they read and build their confidence when they are faced with new texts.
Some kids have more difficulties with blending their sounds than others, so it’s important that every student gets all the practice they need to become a fantastic reader. That’s why when it comes to practicing beginning blends, you can never have too many activities on hand in the classroom!
I wanted to create a resource that had tons of beginning blends practice in one easy, low-prep resource. This Beginning Blends Worksheets and Word Work resource bundles together 25 different combinations of S blends, R blends, and L blends to help students understand a wide variety of phonic blends.
Plus, the activity bundle covers three of the Common Core learning standards, so you can teach confidently knowing your students will be hitting their marks.
You can opt to download the entire bundle, or one of the products (S blend practice, R blend practice, or L blend practice) individually to target specific problem areas among your students.
Whether your students are struggling with their word blending, you’re in need of an activity for reading centers, or you’re just looking for a useful worksheet to give to students, you’ll love using this Beginning Blends Word Work in the classroom!
Why is it important to teach beginning blends?
Beginning blends are one of the foundations of great reading abilities! When kids can’t properly blend their consonants, it’s a sign that their reading skills could use some work.
Blending speaks to a student’s ability to mentally link together sounds in order to form words. They need to be able to hold each sound in their working memory in order to form the words on the page. When they are able to make sense of speech sounds, it’ll help them make sense of unfamiliar words as they read!
