2nd Grade Measurement Activity and Review
If there’s one thing I am all about when it comes to activities in the classroom, it’s hands-on learning. Younger kids are always more engaged and more likely to absorb what we’re teaching them when they have something to keep their little hands busy and their brains active!
When we teach basic addition and subtraction, kids can get bored quickly. And I honestly can’t blame them! As fundamental and necessary as those skills are, it’s a little more difficult to get them excited about learning the concepts.
That’s why I get so excited to move on to teaching the measurement unit when they have the basic mathematical concepts of addition and subtraction down! At the second grade level, they’re ready to learn all of the measurement vocabulary, both customary and metric. And best of all, most measurement activities for 2nd grade are totally hands-on.
Students get to start thinking about lengths, how long the objects are that surround them, and put that into words. It doesn’t get more hands-on than practicing a skill that they can directly apply to their world. And in my experience, they get so excited about breaking out their rulers and taking measurements that they hardly even realize they’re in the middle of a math lesson!
Since I clearly appreciate measurement activities for 2nd grade that are as hands-on and as fun as possible, I wanted to share my own with all of you! My 2nd Grade Measurement Activity and Review is such a joy for students to do. Not only do they get to learn some measuring basics, but they get to cut, paste, and create their own foldable activity as they do it!
How does the 2nd Grade Measurement Activity work?
Every step of this activity is hands-on and interactive, from the assembly to the actual measuring! Your students will be able to cut out the colorful squares in the activity and glue them onto black construction paper (this really makes the colors pop).
Students can create their foldable with black construction paper and practice those direction following skills! Then they can measure, write out their answers, and fold it all up into one neat little resource. There are fill in the blank options so students can follow along with ease.
What’s included in the 2nd Grade Measurement Activity and Review?
Once you download your measurement activity, you’ll find a fun foldable that you can easily print on either plain or colorful paper — whatever you prefer! This activity covers the basics of 2nd grade measurement standards, including…
● Vocabulary (length and height)
● How to measure
● Inches, feet, and yards
● Millimeters, centimeters, and meters
● Comparing measurements
● A practice page
As a bonus, I’ve also included two different versions: a fill in the blank option, and one with the answers already written in. This makes the activity perfect to differentiate for any students that may be struggling to master measurement!
You’ll also get access to a video that demonstrates how to quickly create your foldable activities so they’re ready to roll in the classroom.
How can I use this measurement activity in my 2nd grade classroom?
There are two main ways I like to use this measurement activity in the classroom. The first is as an introduction to the basic concepts at the beginning of your measurement unit. It covers a lot of the basics briefly, so it’s a good way to get students’ familiar with key ideas before diving into the details. Since it’s fun for students, it’s a great option to ease students into the unit and make measurement enjoyable from the get-go!
The second way I like to use this activity is as a review at the end of a measurement unit. Again, since it covers the basics, it’s a great way to wrap up the unit with hands-on experience. It would also be a great review for students that are struggling at any time during the unit.
Students could then keep it in their folder to use as their own mini anchor chart to refer back to all year long!
Whether you opt to use this measurement activity as an intro or a review, I’d recommend that students keep their copies in their folders so they have an easy reference for the rest of the year!
Conclusion
If you’re seeking low-prep measurement activities for 2nd grade, you can’t go wrong with my student-approved 2nd Grade Measurement Activity and Review! Students can cut, glue, and assemble their own fun foldable that covers all of the basics of measurement.
