2nd Grade Math Warm Up
2nd grade is a super important year for building math skills!
Everything gets a little more complex, from word problems to graphing skills. At the 2nd grade level, students are still young but their attention spans are beginning to broaden. Even so, it can be a tad difficult to hold their focus while we cover all of the math standards we need to hit!
Since math does get more advanced in 2nd grade, us teachers need all the help we can get when it comes to making sure our students know their stuff. We are well aware that the knowledge accrued in 2nd grade will be developed in future years, so it’s key to get the basics down before moving ahead.
With that being said, 2nd grade is hectic. We only have so much time in the day to ensure that each student is caught up with the standards. That’s why I love incorporating a daily math warm up into our class routine!
Warm ups are a great addition to a class schedule because they bring everyone together and center the class for a focused lesson. I like to think of them as a step up from calendar time that younger students typically do, but with practice designed to hit standards.
This 2nd Grade Math Warm Up is my absolute favorite way to review those difficult concepts that I struggle to find time for in the day. All it takes is 10 minutes daily, and the kids have so much fun with it. Plus, it requires ZERO copies. Win!
How does the 2nd Grade Math Warm Up work?
This Math Masterminds warm up spiral reviews through every standard required in the 2nd grade. All you need to do is set up the pieces on your bulletin board. Then, you can switch out the pieces and move them around as needed to hit every standard throughout the year.
Every day, the students or teacher pick a number of the day. The students will work together to answer all of the information about that number. These steps are repeated for the shape, money, time, and addition/subtraction problem. The great thing about this 2nd grade math practice is that once you have it set up, you’re ready to do the warm up with your class!

How can you use this 2nd grade math practice in the classroom?
If your math lessons start the day, you can kick off that section with this math warm up. It’s a good rule of thumb to use this review to ease your students into the math lesson. It really helps get their heads in the game!
You may also want to designate a math “leader” for each day. That student can be responsible for choosing the number of the day and leading the class through the warm up. This is a fantastic way to help students develop their leadership and public speaking skills. Plus, they feel super special getting a chance to have their turn as the leader!
Teaching 3rd grade? You can actually get so much use out of this resource as well! 3rd grade teachers have used this as a bridge to connect their lessons to what their students learned the previous year. It would work great at the beginning of the year for a general review or at the start of each new unit. Teachers can lead them through the review, then through a discussion of how the connections and expansion to the new 3rd grade standards!
