Easy Winter Science Experiment – Grow Your Own Polar Bear
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love the grow your own polar bear easy winter science experiment. First of all, anything with gummy bears is always a hit with kids… and yes I let them eat a couple pieces of candy. Second of all, these booklets are the easiest way to teach the parts of the scientific method. This lesson is perfect for winter, a polar bear unit, or just because! I’ll take you through the steps and results that I got with my class so you can try it out too!
1. Collect Polar Bear Winter Science Experiment Materials!
My students absolutely love these mini science notebooks so I created them for a bunch of the science experiments we did throughout the year. I love that they have ALL of the information in one place and each student has a special place to take notes on the scientific method. I added them to my TpT shop too in case you want to use them!
As for ingredients, I grabbed everything from around my house other than the gummy bears! I love how low-prep this experiment is!
2. Teaching the Scientific Method!
Teaching the lesson is actually super easy because I just follow the directions in the booklet. We discuss each step and focus on recording our answers and predictions like a real scientist. We create accurate drawings with correct measurements, colors, etc.
Tip: I suggest doing the gummy bear science experiment overnight. It can be done if you start it in the morning and check it in the afternoon, but I found that the results are more dramatic overnight! Be sure to label each cup of liquid as well!
3. The Gummy Bear Science Experiment Results!
Here’s a little sneak peek at what happens to the gummy bears! Other variations of the experiment could include testing out different color gummy bears in each solution as well!
The Grow Your Own Polar Bear Winter Science Experiment is definitely my favorite experiment of the year! If you test it out in your classroom, be sure to tag me @thesprinkletoppedteacher so I can see your results!
